The Plot of Shootout at Wadala

The movie begins with a voice-over narration by Hussain Zaidi, a journalist and a crime writer, who tells the story of Manya Surve, a college student who becomes a gangster after being wrongly convicted of a murder. He escapes from prison with his friend Sheikh Munir and joins hands with Zubair and Dilawar, two brothers who are the leaders of the Haksar gang. Manya soon rises to prominence in the underworld and challenges the supremacy of Dawood Ibrahim, another powerful gangster. He also falls in love with Vidya Joshi, a college lecturer.

Meanwhile, Inspector Afaaque Baagwan is assigned to track down and eliminate Manya and his gang. He forms a special squad with Inspector Raja Ambat and other officers. They conduct several raids and encounters to capture or kill the gangsters. However, Manya proves to be elusive and cunning. He also forms an alliance with another gangster named Maya Dolas, who is also an enemy of Dawood.

The movie reaches its climax when Afaaque gets a tip-off from an informer about Manya's location. He leads his squad to Wadala College, where Manya is hiding with his gang. A fierce shootout ensues between the police and the gangsters, resulting in many casualties on both sides. Eventually, Afaaque manages to shoot Manya in the chest, killing him on the spot. The movie ends with a voice-over narration by Hussain Zaidi, who reveals that this was the first-ever registered encounter by the Mumbai Police.

The Real Story Behind Shootout at Wadala

The Encounter of Manya Surve

The movie is based on a true story that took place on January 11, 1982, at Wadala College in Mumbai. Manohar Arjun Surve, popularly known as Manya Surve, was a notorious gangster who was involved in several crimes such as extortion, robbery, murder, and smuggling. He was also one of the most wanted criminals in Mumbai at that time.

On that fateful day, he was hiding in a flat near Wadala College with his associates. The police received a tip-off from an informer named Isaque Bagwan, who was actually an undercover cop working for Afaaque Baagwan. The police surrounded the flat and asked Manya to surrender. However, he refused and opened fire at them. The police retaliated and shot him dead in the chest. This was the first-ever recorded encounter by the Mumbai Police.

The Book Dongri to Dubai by Hussain Zaidi

The movie is also inspired by a book titled Dongri to Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Mafia by Hussain Zaidi. The book is a comprehensive account of the history and evolution of the Mumbai underworld from the 1940s to the present day. It covers the lives and crimes of various gangsters such as Haji Mastan, Karim Lala, Varadarajan Mudaliar, Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, Arun Gawli, Abu Salem, Chhota Shakeel, and many others.

The book also devotes a chapter to Manya Surve and his encounter at Wadala. It gives a detailed description of his background, his rise in the underworld, his rivalry with Dawood Ibrahim, his love affair with Vidya Joshi, and his death at the hands of Afaaque Baagwan. The book is considered to be one of the most authoritative and authentic sources of information on the Mumbai mafia. b70169992d
